The Salem Statesman-Journal, the local newspaper in the state capital of Oregon, reported recently on the new $80 million Sanyo Solar silicon ingot/wafer facility being built there on Gaffin Road, a few miles east of Interstate 5. Although the news story included the erroneous subhead calling the future production site a "solar cell manufacturing plant," it did offer a few fresh bits of info on the greenfield construction project.
Sanyo's Scott Landrigan was quoted as saying that the exterior walls should be standing in 30 days, that equipment installation should start in August, that 67 polysilicon crystal growers should be in place by early 2010, and that a total of 92 growing tools will be operating when the 70-MW capacity plant is fully ramped late next year.
During my just-completed Oregon minivacation, I took a midday detour while driving from Eugene to Hillsboro on May 11 and shot some unauthorized photos at the construction site, which is down the road from an American Kennel Club-certified Dachshund breeder and across from verdant open fields. As the images show, most of the dull-grey concrete walls have been erected and the factory shell is starting to take shape.
