Evergreen Solar develops, manufactures and sells solar power products, primarily solar panels that provide reliable and environmentally clean electric power throughout the world. The three markets the Company serves are: wireless power, rural electrification and grid-connected applications. The Company expects to exploit its proprietary and patented technology to produce distinctive products, to reduce manufacturing costs through lower materials use and streamlined processes, and to manufacture internationally for global market penetration. The solar panels produced by Evergreen Solar incorporate proprietary crystalline silicon technology known as String Ribbon wafer production, which uses approximately half the silicon and avoids the sawing of conventional approaches.
In a further extension to the company’s order backlog, Evergreen Solar has agreed to supply IBC SOLAR AG with solar panels to the value of approximately $1.2 billion. The contract, which extends through 2013, brings the company’s contractual backlog to almost $3 billion and is, according to Evergreen’s CEO Richard Feldt, the company’s largest single contract ever.
Two new long-term sales contracts signed in May 2008 pushed Evergreen Solar’s order backlog past the $1 billion level for the first time. Merely a month later, the pioneer of ‘String Ribbon’ wafer technology has secured another two long-term sales contracts valued at approximately $600 million, taking Evergreen Solar’s backlog past $1.7 billion, a new record for the company.
Evergreen Solar has said that two recently signed long-term sales contracts have resulted in an order backlog above $1 billion. Evergreen Solar has signed a deal with Ralos Vertriebs GmbH for approximately $750 million for PV modules to be supplied from July 2008 through 2013 and another deal with a U.S.-based installer. The new contracts equate to approximately 35 percent of the expected 160MW of annual production capacity at Evergreen Solar’s Devens production plant through 2013.
As Evergreen Solar nears completion of its 80MW Phase 1 expansion of its Devens, Massachusetts PV plant making its proprietary ‘String Ribbon’ solar wafer technology, the company has announced Phase 2 expansion at the facility, which will double capacity to 160MW.
Evergreen Solar has signed a second supply agreement with polysilicon supplier DC Chemical, which will bring the agreement’s lifespan through to 2015.
Evergeen Solar is an integrated manufacturer of wafers, cells and panels. Their unique string ribbon technology for making wafers has created quite a stir in the industry. This exclusive video interview with CEO, Richard Feldt, describes this string ribbon processes. The process is continuous, silent and clean: long wires unwind from spools, run through the molten silicon and pull a long “ribbon” of silicon out of the melt. The ribbon is harvested periodically and cut into smaller pieces for further processing into solar cells.
