Sharp Solar

Sharp Corporation started solar cell research and development in 1959 and established the Central Research Laboratories in 1961 for work on electronic equipment and photovoltaic products. By 1963, Sharp had begun mass-producing solar cells. Since then they have emerged as one of the largest producer’s of photovoltaic components. Sharp has manufacturing bases located throughout the world including Japan, U.S. and U.K.

Sharp and Enel set up joint venture for spring 2009

Sharp Corporation and Enel SpA, Italy’s largest power company, are to set up a joint venture in the spring of 2009 which will operate as an independent power producer developing PV power plants with a total capacity of 189MW by the end of 2012.The various power plants will be set up in southern Italy using thin-film solar cells.

Sharp’s new division targets European PV market

With the new Sharp Energy Solution Europe Division, centered in Hamburg, Sharp Solar has tightened its grip on the solar business in Europe. The new structure aims to fortify the European PV market and to work on building future markets. Operating as a separate division of Sharp Electronics Europe since October 2008, The Sharp Energy Solution Europe (SESE) has been responsible for the pan-European solar business and will now be led under the new operating title by Hiroshi Sasaoka as President, with Peter Thiele as Executive VP.
