Rooftop panel system will generate energy for Arcadia store. Sporting goods retailer REI has completed a solar retrofit of its Arcadia store.  The roof of the 26,000-square-foot store is now covered with an array of photovoltaic solar panels, which will self-generate nearly 112,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and up to 30 percent of the store's annual energy needs.

REI plans to retrofit 11 of its stores with solar technology this year, and the Arcadia location is paving the way. "We're the first store to be converted," store manager David Gallagher said. "The system is generating power as I speak."

The system, installed at a cost of about $700,000, will allow the building to draw upon stored solar energy when available. When the solar supply runs low, the store will rely upon its hookup to the electric grid, Gallagher said.
