Silicon Mine B.V., a solar grade silicon start-up, has placed a $91
million order with GT Solar for 48 rod, chemical vapor deposition (CVD)
reactors and silicon tetrachloride (STC) hydrogenation conversion units
for its first polysilicon plant based in The Netherlands. This is the
first win in Europe for GT Solar, according to the company.
“This contract represents the first installation of GT Solar’s polysilicon reactors in Europe,” noted Thomas Zarrella, CEO of GT Solar. “This is further confirmation of GT Solar’s key role in providing technology to meet the global demand for solar energy.”
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with GT Solar as we start to build our business as a key provider in the photovoltaic supply chain. GT Solar has the proven resources and know-how we need to achieve our goals,” commented The Silicon Mine (TSM) President, Gosse Boxhoorn.
TSM’s plant is currently under construction and is expected to open in late 2009 at a cost of approximately €400 million. Evonik Degussa will supply TSM with chlorosilanes, while Fluor is the main contractor. The first phase of the project is planned to produce 3,750MT in 2010 with the long-term goal capacity of 14,000MT per annum.
