3M targets technology capabilities at solar under new renewable energy division

02 February 2009 | By Mark Osborne | News > Power Generation

3M has focused its technology capabilities for the photovoltaics industry into a new ‘Renewable Energy Division,’ which will be responsible for current and future product offerings targeting solar energy generation. 3M expects the new division, which will operate within its Industrial and Transportation Business division, to offer customers a single point of reference for solar-related technologies.

The company noted that its current Mirror Films used instead of glass for Solar Concentrator Panels demonstrated the potential for lower costs, while its next-generation films will also have improved ultraviolet stability, low flammability and self cleaning.

3M also announced that the new division would be led by Michael Roman, a 3M employee who has been given the title of Vice President and General Manager. Roman is currently a VP in 3M’s Optical Systems Division, Asia.

"3M's new operation will serve the renewable energy market globally and bring the best products and technologies from a single source to customers worldwide," commented Roman. "3M's leadership will spread the company's next-generation products to the global marketplace where customers will reap the benefits of having one face that can provide proven solutions, when the need is of the utmost importance."
