BP Solar submits proposal for 37MW project at Brookhaven National Laboratory

16 March 2009 | By Síle Mc Mahon | News > Power Generation

BP Solar VallejoBP Solar has entered negotiations and proffered a proposal for the provision a solar power plant of almost 37MW on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York.

BP Solar was selected to commence negotiations with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) on its proposed plan for the project. BP’s plan includes two large-scale commercial solar projects at the BNL site, each of which would have a capacity of just over 18MW. The most likely outcome of this news is that BP will agree on a 20-year power purchase agreement with LIPA that will see the dual projects begin as soon as possible.

"We are pleased to have been selected by the Long Island Power Authority to enter into further negotiations for a utility-scale opportunity to be located at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory,” said Mark Kerstens, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for BP Solar. “This effort further signifies our commitment to renewable energy development at a large scale not only in New York but across the U.S."
