ECD’s United Solar Ovonic provides product in exchange for equity in solar projects

11 May 2009 | By Mark Osborne | News > Thin Film

Suffering from a lack of demand due to the poor economic conditions, Energy Conversion Devices (ECD) like other PV manufacturers is operating a demand-creation program. Via its subsidiary United Solar Ovonic, ECD is planning to offer ‘UNI-SOLAR’ brand photovoltaic laminates in exchange for equity in solar projects. The program is being offered in collaboration with Enfinity, NV. The partners said that they have identified approximately 10MW of rooftop projects on a short-term installation basis in the U.S. and in Europe.

“Enfinity is an excellent partner, with significant experience in developing and installing rooftop and BIPV applications in our focused geographic markets,” noted Mark Morelli, ECD's president and CEO. “We are enthusiastic about the opportunities that this agreement affords us, and will be working aggressively with Enfinity to finalize the projects and begin construction."

ECD said last week that it had been forced to idle production due to weak demand during a series of temporary shutdowns. A key customer is also struggling and is looking for a buyer.
