Europe’s PV platform outlines competitiveness targets

09 June 2008 | By Síle Mc Mahon | News > Power Generation

PanelThe European Photovoltaic Technology Platform  (EUPVTP) has proposed a set of recommendations to enhance the PV industry in Europe. Under the Presidency of Slovenia, the Annual General Meeting saw the Technology Platform outline the “Solar Europe Initiative” of Europe’s Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan, which discusses the requirements of the European PV industry in order for it to remain competitive and meet its development targets.

The SET Plan, which was presented on November 22nd, 2007, outlined the need for more funding on the part of the European Commission for the industry as a whole, and also set down a proposal to initiate several European Industrial Initiatives (EII), including a Solar Europe Initiative (SEI). These initiatives, according to the Technology Platform, should be industry led, and should aid towards furthering research and innovation of technology.

The EUPVTP’s goals are as follows:

  • Solar PV electricity should supply at least 3% of electricity demand throughout Europe by 2020 (representing approximately 100GWp capacity).

  • Reach grid parity in most of Europe, also by 2020.

  • Maintain industry leadership by Europe.
