Ferrari plant revs up solar PV power

21 January 2009 | By Tom Cheyney | News > Power Generation

eneray_ferrariA solar photovoltaic power system has been activated at Ferrari’s engine mechanical machining facility in Maranello, Italy. The 198.85 KW-peak array was installed by EnerRay on south-facing flat rooftop areas at the plant.

The PV system, comprised of 1075 fixed Mitsubishi 185-Wp panels and two Siemens Sinvert Solar 100 inverters, is expected to produce more than 210,000 KW-hours of clean electricity per year.

The installation comes as part of Ferrari's ongoing environmental sustainability and renewable resources investment program.  The company's plan to reduce the environmental impact of its production activities also includes the installation of a trigeneration plant, which will be operational by the middle of this year.

Ferrari is not the only automotive company deploying solar power at its European facilities. The General Motors assembly plant in Zaragoza, Spain, boasts a 12-MW system using Uni-Solar thin-film PV laminates, said to be the largest of its kind in the world.
