In a rather depressed North Carolina economy, SAS, groSolar and FLS Energy have come together and announced the joint development of a second solar farm on SAS’ Cary, NC, headquarters. The estimated March 2010 completion of the project will generate around 1.9 million kilowatt-hours annually, which provides enough energy to power over 200 homes.

“This project is more proof that solar power is an economically viable energy source for America,” said groSolar CEO Jeff Wolfe. “We applaud SAS for recognizing that environmental preservation can be coupled with economic gain through solar energy implementation.”

The SAS Solar Farm 2 will include roughly 5,200 PV panels, which will cover around seven acres near the existing system. The new solar farm will optimize the area’s natural landscape by using a sun-tracking system to maximize sun exposure and power generation. In turn, Progress Energy will purchase the generated electricity for the public energy grid.

“FLS Energy is honored to help install this landmark solar project,” said FLS Energy President Michael Shore. “The SAS solar farm enables FLS Energy to create more than 10 new North Carolina jobs. The new solar farm is good for the environment and the local economy.”

The SAS Solar Farm 1, which became operational in December 2008, envelops five acres and generates approximately 1.7 million kWh yearly.
