SolarWorld AG has celebrated the topping-out of its new crystalline solar cell manufacturing plant in Freiberg, Germany. The €350 million investment will enable SolarWorld to add approximately 500MW per annum of solar cell capacity by the end of 2010, resulting in 1GW of total capacity at its multiple facilities in Freiberg.

“Thanks to our development work and the latest  technological processes we will be able to produce wafers in a particularly resource-friendly and cost-effective way”, said Frank H. Asbeck, Chairman and CEO of SolarWorld AG. “Thus, the group is consistently following the path of continuous improvement of efficiency which will also be reflected in further cost reductions in the course of the year.”

SolarWorld has initially created 450 positions at the new facility. At the moment the group employs more than 1,500 people in Freiberg and is the largest industrial employer in the region of Central Saxony.
