Alamosa County in south Colorado is the planned location of what will be the second-largest high-efficiency solar PV power plant in North America, once SunPower and Xcel Energy construct their new 17MW solar power plant. The companies have signed up for the construction of a 17MW AC photovoltaic solar power plant that will utilise SunPower’s Tracker systems.
This Alamosa plant will be the second-largest power plant in North America once it has been completed, behind Florida Power & Light (FPL) and SunPower’s 25MW AC plant that is under construction. It is subject to approval by the Colorado Public Utility Commission, as well as the availability of project financing.
Xcel Solar’s Solar*Rewards rebate program has proved popular with homes and businesses alike in Colorado, where the company has accumulated more than 25MW of on-site solar generation. The company also purchases power from an 8.2MW solar farm close to the site of the Alamosa plant.
"We believe that solar power generation will play an increasingly vital role in our efforts to meet the wishes of our Colorado customers for more renewable, clean energy sources," said Tim Taylor, President and CEO for Public Service Co. of Colorado, an Xcel Energy company. "SunPower's experienced approach to solar power plant design and construction will allow us to quickly complete this important project."
