U.S. BLM backtracks on solar farm applications

04 July 2008 | By Síle Mc Mahon | News > Market Watch

OurvisIn a quick u-turn on its proposed two-year study on the potential environmental impact of large solar farms on public land in six western states, the Bureau of Land Management has said that it will continue to accept applications for solar farms during its assessment study rather than putting new applications on hold.

“We heard the concerns expressed during the scoping period about waiting to consider new applications,” said BLM Director James Caswell, “and we are taking action. By continuing to accept and process new applications for solar energy projects, we will aggressively help meet growing interest in renewable energy sources, while ensuring environmental protections.”

The BLM will continue with its public scoping period and impact study.
