Obtaining Bundestag approval for Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrat Party proposal for further cuts to Germany’s solar power feed-in tariffs could be in doubt after Horst Seehofer, the Bavaria state premier and sister party, Christian Social Union (CSU) to Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats told Reuters he was opposed to the cuts. The centre-right coalition has a majority of seats in the German lower house of parliament, which will have to vote on proposed cuts.
Seehofer was quoted as saying that the cuts would have an ‘unacceptable impact’ on the Bavarian region as many PV manufacturers, system integrators and suppliers are based in the region. He said that, "The cuts the government wants are too high, go in the wrong direction and will needlessly cut the innovation potential."
After the proposed cuts were announced, it was regarded as a forgone conclusion that the changes to the FiT would be endorsed by the Bundestag.
Rueters noted that it was unclear what would happen if Seehofer's CSU party actually refuses to back the measure.
