Bulgaria’s Intersol launches country’s first solar power plant

Located southeast of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, in the town of Ihtiman near Paunovo, the country’s first solar power plant has opened and is expected to produce 1,250MWh of energy per annum. Project investor Intersol announced the opening of the plant, which is claimed to be the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe.

Construction and design of the plant was taken care of by Sun Service, while IBC Solar AG was enlisted as project consultant. The cost of the plant, which was completed over the space of a year, was approximately €4 million.

This plant will contribute towards the country’s aim to provide 16% of its energy requirements from renewable sources by the year 2020. According to Visit Bulgaria, the country boasts on average 30% more sunshine than Germany, meaning that Bulgaria could be one to watch for the future.
