California saw record number in January for homeowners, business who turned to solar for electricity

California’s Vote Solar Initiative advised that January saw a record amount of homes and business in the state going solar. According to the initiative, January saw 42.4MW of behind-the-meter solar installed, which is the largest amount in the history of the California Solar Initiative program. Additionally, 49.5MW of incentive applications were received, and while that number doesn’t mark a record, it is said to be higher than normal.

In specifically looking at  solar in schools, the Vote Solar Initiative turned to The Mercury News, which  reported that, “The California Solar Initiative, launched in 2007 offered rebates for installation, resulting in 191MW of active K-12 and community college installations as of June, with another 141MW planned or under construction. Over 30 years, the projects are expected to save schools and colleges about US$3 billion in energy costs, with an anticipated net saving of US$1.5 billion, after subtracting installation and maintenance costs…”

The initiative noted that the “going solar” record for California was completed amidst incentives having dropped significantly over the past few years. Most notably, incentives in 2005 were US$4.50/W while, for most residential installations today, that number has dropped to US$0.25/W.
