The city of Dover (USA) and Delmarva Power have teamed up in an effort to construct a 10MW solar power plant on the city's Garrison Oak Technology Park, which will be named Dover SUN Park.
This park will be the first utility scale solar power plant in the region and will be owned by White Oak Solar Energy, LLC, an affiliate of LS Power.
The project will produce enough clean power for more than 1,700 homes as well as creating about 150 local jobs during the construction period. Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation (DEMEC) and the state's Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU) are also considering participation in the project, although this is not yet finalised.
Dover Mayor Carleton E. Carey, Sr. said, "Dover's leadership in this project demonstrates not only our commitment to renewable energy but also the wisdom of the State's legislators who allowed for the creation of voluntary renewable energy programs. We look forward to finalizing this agreement with LS Power and working with Delmarva Power, as well as other utilities, and state and federal agencies."
Dover has already constructed a 5kW photovoltaic solar array at its Electric Administration building, with a second in the pipeline, as well as upgrading its power plants to utilize a cleaner fuel mix.
The proposed Dover SUN Park resulted from a request for proposals initiated by the City in early 2008 seeking power-generating sources that were reliable, cost competitive and environmentally prudent.
