Comtec Solar seeing increased demand for ‘Super Mono’ wafers

Monocrystalline wafer producer Comtec Solar Systems Group said it had completed the qualification processes to supply two existing customers headquartered in the US and Japan from its Malaysian-based wafer production plant. 

Comtec Solar also noted that it had completed the qualification process with a new undisclosed Japanese customer for its N-type monocrystalline ‘Super Mono’ products, which included pilot shipments that had started in the second quarter of 2015. Unspecified volume shipments were expected to start in the second half of 2015, according to the company.

However, Comtec Solar also said that it was in the process of qualification for Super Mono wafers with potential new customers in the US, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. 

Several US headquartered PV manufacturers such as SunPower, Suniva, Mission Solar, TetraSun (owned by First Solar) and Silevo (owned by SolarCity) are all at various stages of building and ramping new solar cell capacity using N-type monocrystalline wafers. 

Recently, Panasonic (Japan), Korea-based LG and SolarWorld USA also announced incremental N-type mono solar cell capacity expansions. 

Producers such as Canadian Solar have also announced monocrystalline solar cell capacity expansions in the last year. 

According to PV Tech’s quarterly report on global PV capacity expansion announcements, over 1.5GW of mono-based cell and module assembly plans have been announced since the beginning of 2014 with the majority announced in the last nine months.
