Conergy has announced that it will install PV projects totalling more than 4MW at a number of schools in Hawaii. All projects are expected to be completed by 2014.
Aiea High School in Honolulu is making a start with 522 Conergy solar modules installed on the school’s rooftop. Aiea will be followed by Kahuku, Kaimuki and Waianae High Schools as well as more elementary schools over the course of two years.
Conergy is collaborating with Hawaii Pacific Solar and RC Energy on these projects and the energy will be sold under a PPA, which means that there are no upfront costs for the Hawaiian Department of Education.
Anthony Fotopoulus, president of Conergy North America, commented on the project: “We're very proud of this new project in Hawaii, because it combines economic, environmental and social aspects. Over a 20-year period, each school will, on average, save around US$500,000 on their electricity costs and most importantly, will also be achieving their aims of educating children about green issues. The installation will save on the production of 117 metric tons of harmful CO2 greenhouse gases – that corresponds to the emissions from 49,748 litres of gas or 43,403 litres of oil. This is how the new generation of young people will learn to approach energy in a totally different way.”
