US utility Dominion Virginia Power is to spend US$700 million through 2020 on solar power projects as part of a larger capital expenditure plan on energy infrastructure and upgrades totalling US$9.5 million.

Dominion said that almost US$2 billion would be spent annually but this could equate to only US$140 million per annum on solar programs.

The vast majority of spending was said to be focused on transmission lines and sub-stations (US$3.6-billion) and US$3.5-billion for new generation and environmental improvements.

The utility claimed that it had held residential energy rates to less than a 1% increase, annually as efficiency programs and holding down operating costs had been achieved.

Dominion Virginia Power is said to operate in 14 US states and has an energy generation portfolio of around 24.4GW.
