French developer EDF Energies Nouvelles and Japanese industrial conglomerate Marubeni have entered Chile’s solar market with a 146MW project.
The companies will jointly own the Laberinto Project in Antofagasta in the Atacama desert. The plant will operate on a merchant basis selling its electricity directly into the spot market.

Marubeni said it planned to expand its presence in the region. The company’s interest in Chile is another indication of the market’s maturity with its interest traditionally focused on its domestic market.
Speaking to PV Tech at the recent PV Expo event in Tokyo, Murubeni America’s sales and marketing manager Alessandro Fujisaka said it had previously concentrated its solar efforts on benefitting from Japan’s high historical feed-in tariff, but had now gained experience in Japanese ‘megasolar’ projects that could be transferred to other markets
