The University of Seville, the Social Council and the Focus-Abengoa Foundation have awarded the 9th “Javier Benjumea Puigcerver” research prize to Eduardo Fernández Camacho for his applied research on the increase in performance of solar-thermal plants through predictive control. The prize was awarded to the university professor on the basis that his submitted work was of “extraordinary scientific value” to the globally important issue of energy supply.

The jury for the award stated that Camacho’s research had been “carried out with diligence, offering competitive solutions based on solid research performed.” It was felt that the contributions made by Camacho contain “a clear scientific, business and social interest, which combined with the extraordinary business career of the researcher, makes it a worthy winner of the ninth edition of the Javier Benjumea Puigcerver Research Prize.”

The research award, presented at a ceremony at the University of Seville, was designed to recognise the contribution to research and development by academics within the university system. The criteria for judging the award include the quality of the work, its application to the University of Seville’s work and its potential use for matters concerning socio-economic and business development. As part of the prize, Camacho will receive €18,000, a diploma and will have his work published.

Eduardo Fernández Camacho is currently a university professor in the Automation and Systems Engineering Area at the University of Seville; he has authored more than 250 articles and reference books in the field of control systems for solar energy. He is involved with representing and managing research projects at a regional, national and European level. Camacho is a member of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC).

The Javier Benjumea Puigcerver Research Prize was initiated in 2003 and last year was awarded to Antonio Gómez Expósito for his work entitled “Estimation of the multilevel status: new paradigm for the networks of the 21st century.”
