El Salvador tendering 150MW of renewable energy projects

El Salvador’s National Energy Council (CNE) is inviting bids for 150MW of renewable energy projects.

The process is being supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and comes after a study measured the maximum capacity of wind and solar power that can be introduced to the network while ensuring it remains fully operational and reliable.

The tendering, to be developed by the General Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (SIGET) and distribution companies, is expected to be complete before the end of this year and the projects awarded are to enter operation in 2018.

The winning projects combined are expected to supply energy to around 250,000 households.

The country is expecting 100MW of solar projects to come online next year after its previous competitive tendering. There are already 15MW online. It is not clear how much of the latest tender will be awarded to solar projects.

Last August large-scale solar developer SolarReserve started developing a 20MW PV plant in El Salvador – the first large-scale PV project ever built in the Latin American country.
