Citing strong demand for German made solar modules and operating at capacity limits, SolarWorld is to expand production at its plant in Freiberg, Saxony to 450MW by the end of 2010. The company said that more than 500 new jobs would be created with the tripling of production. SolarWorld is already expanding wafer production to 1GW at a new facility also in Freiberg.
“We are producing at the highest quality level in Germany,” noted Frank H. Asbeck, CEO and Chairman of SolarWorld. “The basis for this is provided by our highly motivated employees, our successful research and development work and our Freiberg site with its decades of tradition in solar power technology. Even in a more hotly contested solar market quality ‘Made in Germany’ is a trump card.”
The new wafer plant has an investment of approximately €350 million and will be fully operational by the end of 2010. SolarWorld did not say what the investment would be for the expansion on module production. The news was announced at the EU PVSEC event in Hamburg, Germany.
