Nanotechnology researcher imec today announced that it is to become a full partner of Dutch solar research group Solliance. imec is to share its thin-film R&D with the group, whose partners include energy research centre ECN, scientific research organization TNO, the Eindhoven-based Holst Centre and the Eindhoven University of Technology.
Solliance was set up to promote thin-film PV development in the Eindhoven-Leuven-Aachen region. It encourages research into thin-film silicon, organic photovoltaics and CIGS, whilst working closely with industry partners. The group is based at its laboratory in Eindhoven, which was funded by a €28 million grant from the Dutch province of North Brabant, although research will also take place at imec’s own facilities in Leuven, Belgium.
Luc Van den hove, president and CEO of imec said: “The joining of forces in Solliance creates focus and critical mass, needed to be a top level player in the world of thin film PV.”
Hein Willems, Solliance’s managing director said: “Strengthened by imec as the fifth member, our research now stretches across the entire field, from fundamentals of materials science to sophisticated production technologies.”
