First Solar has announced plans to open an office in the United Arab Emirates, according to Bloomberg reports, in order to meet the demand for solar energy in the Middle East. The company is currently negotiating with potential partners about contracts and a possible production plant in the UAE, as First Solar’s technical development manager Karim Asali commented.

Saudi Arabia has plans to install 41GW of solar energy within the next 20 years and therefore companies are looking to expand their business to Middle Eastern countries. First Solar has already developed a 5MW project in Abu Dhabi and intents to focus on more utility-sized plants in the region.

“Saudi Arabia is clearly the biggest solar market in the Middle East,” Asali commented further. “This is the first time we’ve seen numbers for solar power developments on the GW scale in this region.”
