Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai has launched the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which aims to construct a 13MW solar PV power plant in its first phase. According to AMEInfo, the project was initiated by the Supreme Council of Energy and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority will be managing and executing the solar park.

First Solar has been selected to construct the first phase of the PV Project, which will be connected directly to the DEWA grid. Construction is expected to be finalized by October 2013. The country has hopes that the solar park’s total capacity will eventually add up to 1,000MW as other projects follow this first 13MW installation.

"The total cost of the project is Dhs124m for the installation of the 13MW photovoltaic power plant, including the engineering, procurement and construction of solar plant, a 33 KV substation and connection to DEWA's Grid network. The plant will be constructed as a partnership project with the investment and ownership shared between six Dubai Supreme Council of Energy member entities: DEWA, DM, DPE, DUBAL, DUSUP and ENOC," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
