At the recent China-U.S. Presidential summit, attended by several dignitaries including President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao, the fate of the what is being referred to as the world’s largest solar power plant was sealed. Following the announcement in early September of the establishment of the plant in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, a cooperation framework has now been signed that provides further details on the various aspects of the project.
First Solar President Bruce Sohn and Mayor Yun Guangzhong of the Ordos City Government signed the agreement that confirms June 1, 2010 as the start date for the 30MW Phase 1 of the project. Phases 2, 3 and 4 will amount to 100MW, 870MW, and 1,000MW, respectively, with the total planned 2GW scheduled for completion at the end of Phase 4 in 2019. Phases 2 and 3 are scheduled for completion by 2014.
This project will contribute toward a planned 11.95GW New Energy Industry Demonstration Zone in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, that will see renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric and biomass power combined to provide a steady supply of renewable energy to the region.
