First Solar has announced that it will begin developing a 139MW solar power facility, known as the Campo Verde Solar Project, near El Centro in Imperial County, California, US.
First Solar will begin constructing the facility using its advanced thin-film PV modules in 3Q 2012 and is forecast to be completed in 2013. According to the company, its thin-film PV modules “generate clean, renewable energy with no emissions, waste or water consumption during operation”. When complete, the facility is estimated to generate enough electricity to power approximately 50,000 average Californian homes, displacing 80,000 metric tons of CO2 per year.
The output generated by the facility will be purchased by San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) under a 20-year power purchase agreement, which was approved on May 24, 2012, by the California Public Utilities Commission.
The Campo Verde project is jointly owned by First Solar and US Solar Holdings LLC, but First Solar has contractual rights to acquire 100% ownership interest and is in the process of completing its acquisition.
