According to the German Solar Industry Federation (BSW-Solar), thousands of workers at over 35 solar based companies in the country will attend the nationwide demonstrations being held today, to oppose plans by Norbert Röttgen, Germany’s Federal Environment Minister to cut feed-in tariffs for solar energy. The federation wants the proposed cuts to be dropped.
The industry federation believes the proposed cuts are too aggressive and will lead to massive job losses, especially in eastern regions, which have a strong manufacturing base and high unemployment compared to western regions of the country. Tens of thousands of sustainable jobs could be a threat, the federation said.
The BSW also believes that German-based manufacturer’s technological and quality leadership in solar module manufacturing would come under threat hundreds of German solar companies going out of business.
"The excessive double-digit reduction plans are endangering one of the most important job and economic drivers for our country. Production of PV modules must be able to continue to take place in Germany, so that we can keep the achieved technological leadership," said Günther Cramer , President of the Federal Solar Industry Association.
