Hanwha Q CELLS completes third IPP solar plant in Japan

The Japanese subsidiary of South Korean conglomerate, Hanwha Group, has completed a 24MW PV power plant in Kitsuki, Oita prefecture, in the south-west of the country.

Hanwha Q CELLS Japan developed the project, dubbed Hanwha Solar Power Kitsuki, and will be the independent power producer (IPP) now the plant is operational.

The ground-mounted plant consists of nearly 100,000 of C QELLS’ Q.PRO-G3 solar panels and will generate an estimated 24,000 MWh of clean energy per year, the company said.

“We are very glad to provide the area with clean energy,” said Jongseo Kim, managing director of Hanwha Q CELLS Japan. “The Oita project strengthens our footprint as an independent power producer in the attractive Japanese market and underlines Hanwha Q CELLS’ international position as a provider of reliable and high-quality power plant solutions.”

It will be the company’s third IPP project in Japan. In 2013 it completed the 2MW Awanishi Solar Hills Power Plant in Tokushima prefecture and another 0.8MW project in Hokkaido last year.

It has a further two IPP projects under construction – another 1.2MW Hokkaido and 3MW in Tokushima. Overall the company said it was targeting 100MW of PV in Japan, without giving any timeline.
