Konarka Technologies’ New Bedford, Massachusetts facility now features the world’s first OPV semi-transparent BIPV curtain wall, laminated onto seven of the company’s south and east facing 56”x67” windows. Utilizing its own Power Plastic technology, Konarka was able to incorporate the technology into the building structure, producing the largest OPV installation of its kind.

“Konarka’s Power Plastic made with proprietary, semi-transparent material and laminated inexpensively onto glass is easily integrated into building walls,” said Howard Berke, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Konarka. “Organic PV is much less energy intensive to manufacture compared with crystalline silicon. Konarka’s transparent photovoltaic film is ideal for glass curtain walls because of its superior low light sensitivity, thermal performance, light weight and performance over a wide range of sunlight angle of incidence.”

Konarka’s Power Plastic is suitable for a variety of applications, as it can be laminated directly onto the window itself. The New Bedford installation demonstrates this, as well as proving that the Power Plastic can effectively harvest energy from various walls, not just the southern exposures.

Konarka is exhibiting at Intersolar Europe, booth A2.151.
