Merck and Dyesol sign joint development agreement for dye solar cells

Merck and Dyesol have announced their plans to work together to create electrolytes for use in dye solar cells (DSC). The joint agreement is slated to be an indication of the potential for future commercial agreements, which would allow Merck to manufacture existing and next generation electrolytes for DSC applications such as photovoltaic renewable energy sources.

Dr. Emil Aust, Senior Manager of Ionic Liquids for Merck, stated that "Photovoltaic renewable energy sources are showing increasing potential worldwide. The cooperation with Dyesol, the world leader in the dye solar cell sector, offers us the opportunity to leverage valuable potential in this attractive market."

Dyesol has agreed to supply its results of the past 12 years of testing on over 400 different proprietary electrolytes that resulted in DSC with a proven stability of 25 years in European conditions. The companies first phase of collaboration will focus on the development of new electrolytes, optimization of electrolytes for high performance, and refinement of material specifications to assure ultralong life and scale-up for volume manufacture.
