nTact and imec’s Holst Centre partner on flexible roll-to-roll technologies

Roll-to-roll PV manufacturing will receive a boost with the news that imec’s Holst Centre, an open-innovation initiative, has teamed up with nTact for developments in the field of flexible electronics. nTact is the trade name for FAS Holdings Group, a US manufacturer of high-precision deposition systems for the microelectronics and energy industries.

The research agreement will see the development of a method of creating patterned deposition of homogeneous film layers on flexible foils, which is necessary to large-scale manufacturing and commercialization of technologies such as flexible OLED lighting and OPV.

nTact has developed a technology dubbed ‘selective area coating’, which could prove an enabling factor in this research effort. The collaboration between the Holst Centre and nTact will result in the development and application of this technology within the scope of the partnership.

“We are very proud to have nTact on board”, commented Ronn Andriessen, program manager of large-area printing at the Holst Centre. “Having access to their unique technology – and being able to contribute to it – is a big asset for our own researchers and the other partners in the program. The outcome of the research will be a necessary step towards large-volume manufacturing of OPV and OLED lighting devices on flexible substrates.”

    Photovoltaics International 16th Edition

This sixteenth edition of Photovoltaics International marks four years of production of the quarterly journal. As always, our focus is on efficiency and quality improvement and cost reduction in manufacturing. As 2012 rolls along, companies are falling by the wayside due to supply and demand issues, ASP declines and drastic governmental subsidy cuts. A clear picture of 2012 is offered through papers from the likes of TÜV Rheinland, Fraunhofer ISE, SEMI PV Group and EPIA, amongst others.

    Photovoltaics International Lite, Volume 05 - 2011

This digital interactive Lite sees Tom Cheyney follow Agua Caliente’s progress on becoming one of first truly utility-scale PV power farms, where 40–50MW (AC) will be commissioned by the end of the year. We also feature one of the world’s largest silicon thin-film PV power plants, Avenal; a report on warnings of the collapse of module prices from Solarbuzz and PI-Berlin presents tips on PV module testing. A print version of this edition will be distributed at Solar Power International 2011 in Dallas, Texas.
