Plextronics claims organic solar cell conversion record

Plextronics has said that its single layer organic solar cell technology has been certified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in Golden, Colorado with a conversion efficiency of 5.4 percent, which is claimed to be a new world record.

"Today's world-record performance demonstrates the rapid pace at which our technology is progressing," said Troy Hammond, Vice President of Products for Plextronics. "We look forward to continuing this advancement until we have enabled low-cost solar cell products with our Plexcore ink system."

The Plexcore ink system is designed to address ultra-low cost organic photovoltaic cell production as part of commercializing the technology at the important threshold of US$1 per watt.

Plextronics was founded in 2002 as a spinout from Carnegie Mellon University, based upon conductive polymer technology developed by Dr. Richard McCullough.
