Powerway has announced it will be investing (US$1,265,328.63) Rand10M$ (partly self-financing, partly bank financing) for production facilities in South Africa, with the intention of supplying mounting structures for over 500MW of solar farms per year. Working in conjunction with the South African government’s BBBEE program, the company will be installing its mounting structures for utility scale PV power plants: Powerfit, PowerScrew and PowerTracker.

Powerway will set up 6 production bases in towns like Kimberley, De Aar and Upington, with co-ownership of the local citizens; this investment will create over 2000 jobs for the local population.

Powerway will at the same time set up galvanizing facilities for all the steel structures of solar farms, as well as a training center for the local workforce in Kimberley. The China-based company plans to invest in training centers to train local managers and workforce to produce state-of-the-art mounting structures that is necessary for utility scale solar farms.

Powerway is pleased and very proud to be given the opportunity to participate in the new solar boom of this wonderful emerging market, and is ready to invest in technology transfer to contribute to the local economy, especially to boost and bloom the African community. This investment program is estimated to be completed in six months, then we will be able to accommodate over 4000 employment opportunities for the local people and to supply mounting structures for over 500MW of solar farms per year. And for this 500MW solar farm mounting structure, we will need over 30,000 tons of steel, and over 500 tons of extruded aluminum material on an annual basis.” said Benson Wu, CEO of Powerway.

    Photovoltaics International 16th Edition

This sixteenth edition of Photovoltaics International marks four years of production of the quarterly journal. As always, our focus is on efficiency and quality improvement and cost reduction in manufacturing. As 2012 rolls along, companies are falling by the wayside due to supply and demand issues, ASP declines and drastic governmental subsidy cuts. A clear picture of 2012 is offered through papers from the likes of TÜV Rheinland, Fraunhofer ISE, SEMI PV Group and EPIA, amongst others.

This digital interactive Lite sees Tom Cheyney follow Agua Caliente’s progress on becoming one of first truly utility-scale PV power farms, where 40–50MW (AC) will be commissioned by the end of the year. We also feature one of the world’s largest silicon thin-film PV power plants, Avenal; a report on warnings of the collapse of module prices from Solarbuzz and PI-Berlin presents tips on PV module testing. A print version of this edition will be distributed at Solar Power International 2011 in Dallas, Texas.
