Project Focus: First Solar, NRG start operations at record-setting 21MW PV power plant in Blythe

What is being called the largest solar PV project in California and the biggest thin-film plant in the U.S. has started commercial operations ahead of schedule. The 21MW site in Blythe, developed and built by First Solar and acquired by NRG Energy in November, operates under a 20-year power purchase agreement, with the electricity generated sold to Southern California Edison.

The 200-acre PV power plant took three months to construct and install, employing about 175 people during that time. Under the terms of a long-term contract with NRG, First Solar will provide operations and maintenance services at Blythe.

The cadmium telluride-powered installation will generate over 45,000 megawatt-hours annually, enough to power almost 17,000 homes.
