Phaesun, along with its partner Ikratos Africa, is constructing 10 solar power plants in Koudougou Region in Burkina Faso, which is one of the poorest regions in the world. The plants are due to be completed at the end of March 2010 and will provide renewable electricity for telecommunications plants.
Telecommunications company Telecel Faso, which has covered 75% of the network with diesel-powered telecommunications plants in the past, is working as the contracting party.
"Thanks to every solar plant, Telecel Faso saves more than €30,000, as compared to the diesel-driven plants, and around 184 tonnes of CO2 annually," explained Amar Chikha of Phaesun.
The solar plants will all be equipped with a remote monitoring system and are nearly maintenance free. Each system consists of 108 monocrystalline modules from ET Solar, batteries from Hoppecke, and charge controllers that were developed especially for telecommunication systems and are particularly suitable for hot regions. Each system has a total output of 9.18kW.
The first of the 10 plants went online Feb. 16. Further solar plants are also planned, as Telecel Faso heads for 100% renewable network coverage.
