Project Focus: SPI signs deal for 2.24MW solar system installations in Baldwin Park schools

Solar Power, Inc. has embarked on a new solar system installation project that will see the company set up eight PV systems at seven schools and a district office in Baldwin Park, California. The Baldwin Park Unified School District (BPUSD) has commissioned the project, which will total 2.24MW on completion, with the aim of saving an estimated $22.6 million in electricity costs.

Construction of the systems, which will use SPI’s Peaq shade structures, is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2010. The Peaq systems are designed to provide covered parking while generating solar energy for the schools’ needs.

“This project has been a long time coming and we are very excited to be starting it at a time when it is needed most,” said Mark Skvarna, Superintendent for Baldwin Park Unified School District. “This is exactly the type of cost-saving project most school districts are looking for today. Not only will we be able to significantly reduce our operating costs and have a positive impact on the environment, we are freeing funds for our core mission which is educating our students.”
