New Energy Technologies advised that it had appointed Dr. Scott Hammond as principal scientist and Dr. Christopher Harris to its board of advisors. Both Hammond and Harris join New Energy from the US DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which has been partnering with New Energy through a cooperative research and development agreement for the advancement of the company’s SolarWindow technology.

Harris has a background in evaluating a technology’s technical strength, building strategies for advanced product development with commercial partners and negotiating licensing agreements with public research institutions, private companies and Fortune 500 companies. He is a certified licensing professional and a registered patent agent at the US Patent and Trademark Office. He received his PhD in nuclear particle physics, as well as his MA and BS degrees in physics, from the University of Virginia.

Harris presently serves as director of licensing at Vanderbilt University. He has tenured as associate director of licensing at NREL and as a senior licensing manager at the University of Virginia Patent Foundation.

"I'm honoured to welcome Dr. Harris and Dr. Hammond to our team," stated John Conklin, president and CEO of New Energy Technologies. "Dr. Hammond brings a special blend of organic chemistry and photovoltaic device fabrication experience important to advancing our SolarWindow technology towards commercial production. As a Nuclear Physicist, Patent Agent, and Licensing Executive who's successfully partnered new technologies with Fortune 5 corporations, Dr. Harris has the depth of technical insight and business expertise that we very much look forward to leveraging."

Scott Hammond will bring experience in the development of coatings for generating electricity and the application of the coating in the manufacturing of PV device architectures to his new position as principal scientist. Hammond is versed in polymer design and organic synthesis and holds skills for various systems and methods of applying coatings to different material surfaces.

He has an experienced background in OPV, which will be useful in the development of New Energy’s SolarWindow technology. Hammond is specifically skilled in the design and synthesis of small molecule and polymeric donor materials, the development of new solution-processed contact materials, the fabrication of OPV devices, large-area device fabrication and the development of solution-processed flexible and transparent moisture barriers.

Hammond is also said to be well versed in nanostructured organic materials, with a particular emphasis on optoelectronic materials. He has worked on developing nanostructured materials for the improved performance, simplified processing and increased lifespan of the product.

Hammond received his PhD in organic/materials chemistry and nanotechnology from the University of Washington, Seattle and his BS in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He has won several awards including the Hypercube Scholar Award and the Mindlin Brothers Fellowship for Creativity in Science. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Materials Research Society.

    Photovoltaics International 16th Edition

This sixteenth edition of Photovoltaics International marks four years of production of the quarterly journal. As always, our focus is on efficiency and quality improvement and cost reduction in manufacturing. As 2012 rolls along, companies are falling by the wayside due to supply and demand issues, ASP declines and drastic governmental subsidy cuts. A clear picture of 2012 is offered through papers from the likes of TÜV Rheinland, Fraunhofer ISE, SEMI PV Group and EPIA, amongst others.

    Photovoltaics International Lite, Volume 05 - 2011

This digital interactive Lite sees Tom Cheyney follow Agua Caliente’s progress on becoming one of first truly utility-scale PV power farms, where 40–50MW (AC) will be commissioned by the end of the year. We also feature one of the world’s largest silicon thin-film PV power plants, Avenal; a report on warnings of the collapse of module prices from Solarbuzz and PI-Berlin presents tips on PV module testing. A print version of this edition will be distributed at Solar Power International 2011 in Dallas, Texas.
