As it plans to establish the U.S.’s largest inverter manufacturing facility, the SMA Group’s response to a dearth of inverter suppliers for the North American market will see an additional 1GW of inverters manufactured for distribution in the region. The Denver, Colorado-based 1GW facility will also be a candidate for further expansion in the future.
The new €15 million facility will house the manufacture of such products as the Sunny Boy, Sunny Central and Sunny Island. SMA has finalised the long-term rental of the premises and has signed the necessary documents with the Etkin Johnson Group (a Denver-based real estate developer), the State of Colorado and the City of Denver for the establishment of the facility in the state.
“In the medium term, we expect the US market to become the largest solar market globally”, says Günther Cramer, CEO of SMA Solar Technology AG. “With the new production in Denver, SMA will be able to reduce transportation and interim storage costs as well as currency exchange risks.”
Employing approximately 700 staff, SMA’s new venture will enter production in the middle of 2010. The company recently established the world’s largest inverter manufacturing facility at 4GW per annum in Kassel, Germany, which coincided with a 25% year-on-year decline in sales.
