Solar plans for Denver International Aiport await approval

Denver International Airport wants to build a US$7 million solar electric-generating system to power its fuel storage and distribution system; this will be in addition to the existing 2MW solar PV system near the terminal.

Airport officials will ask the City Council for approval to sign a contract with two companies to develop the 1.6MW project on about 9 acres north of the airfield.

This project, if approved, will provide almost all the electricity needed to power the airport's fuel farm. The airport will buy electricity from the solar companies for about 90% of the rate charged by its commercial supplier, Xcel Energy.

The system is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
