US energy provider SolarCity has announced that it is offering to supply solar power to residents on Long Island, New York, for “less than the price of a tank of gas”.

Following a recent ruling by the Long Island Power Authority, SolarCity is now able to supply Long Island residents directly with solar power for a monthly price starting at US$39. This price, according to the company, is lower than current utility rates enabling customers to save on energy costs.

Furthermore, SolarCity is offering customers the opportunity to lock themselves into lower rates to protect themselves from utility price increases in the future.

“Long Island is one of the most affordable places in the country to go solar,” said Ed Steins, SolarCity’s Northeast Regional Vice President.

“SolarCity allows local homeowners to lock in rates for clean electricity and save on monthly utility bills.”

The company sees New York as a key state to develop solar. SolarCity recently opened its third office in New York in Happauge and currently employs over 100 New Yorkers among its Albany, Westchester County and Long Island offices.

The state is committed and supportive of the solar industry. This is demonstrated in the announcement by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo last week which revealed that the state would be injecting US$1.5 billion over the next ten years into the NY-Sun Initiative. The initiative aims to quadruple the state’s customer-sited solar in 2013.
