Solarfun plans 100MW module plant to feed 600MW PV projects in Inner Mongolia

Although financing and government approval have yet to be sorted, Hohhot City, the capital city of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China has selected Solarfun Power Holdings to support approximately 600MW of solar power projects in the region. A letter of intent has been signed which also includes the building of a 100MW PV module production plant to service the projects, though timeline details were not revealed.

"Hohhot City has a number of advantages in developing PV projects, including abundant sunshine and national support,” noted Wu Wenyuan, Vice Mayor of Hohhot City. “After discussing with and inspecting a number of major PV manufactures in China, we selected Solarfun as a major supplier for these projects. We are excited to partner with Solarfun."

“This agreement demonstrates our solid market position in China and our commitment to the development of China's PV market,” commented Peter Xie, President of Solarfun. “Hohhot City has been approved to be one of the pioneer cities for using PV systems by the National Development and Reform Commission and it is a key junction that connects to the North China grid. Hohhot City currently has the largest wind power generation capacity in China and is generally known for its extensive sunshine and commitment to renewable energy projects. Big MW solar deals in China have been signed in recent months from many of the major PV manufacturers as government support gathers pace. However, concern is mounting over how quickly such projects will get approval and finance and actually be completed to the initial amounts being touted.

These deals are also currently exclusively within China with Chinese-based PV manufacturers supply the modules.
