Solon's Italian subsidiary and logistics firm Interporto di Padova have signed an agreement to build what is being called the world's largest photovoltaic roof-mounted system in Padua, Italy. Interporto di Padova will provide 250,000 m² of space on top of its of its logistics center for the construction of the 15MWp PV power station, which will generate as much as 17 million kWh of electricity annually.
Some 67,500 crystalline-silicon modules will be manufactured for the system at Solon's 100MWp production facility in Carmagiano di Brenta. The project will employ up to 450 people. Construction will begin in September.
Although the Padua rooftop PV array will become the largest solar system of its kind when activated--surpassing the now-largest installation, the 12MWp ECD Uni-Solar amorphous-silicon thin-film laminate system at General Motors' Zaragoza, Spain, assembly plant--its reign may be short lived. Preliminary planning has been announced for a 18MWp or larger solar rooftop installation to be constructed on top of the Milan Trade Fair complex.
