Unirac was faced with a unique position to be part of a well-publicized humanitarian effort at Haiti’s Mirebalais Hospital. The company recently provided Sullivan & McLaughlin with a customized flat roof RapidRac G10 PV mounting solution to optimize a 400kW solar installation, which sits on the rooftop of the soon to be opened hospital.

The hospital is being built as part of a restoration project following the country’s January 12, 2010, 7.0 magnitude earthquake. The solar project was designed to meet the energy needs of the hospital, allowing the facility to function independently from an energy source that has proven to be unreliable and cost prohibitive. Further, the installation may even be able to return extra capacity back to the power grid.

Unirac’s RapidRac G10 allowed for the solar panels to be securely mounted 8” above the roof with a 10 degree tilt angle. Further, the system fit the bill for interesting criteria, which includes hurricane force wind loads and seismic activity through its ballast weights.

"Every solar project presents new, unforeseen challenges and this project was no exception. Our ability to offer custom hardware, as well as dedicated, professional service is what sets us apart in the mounting solutions industry. We are proud to have been a key partner in the effort to change the face of public health care in Haiti," says Unirac CEO Peter Lorenz. "RapidRac addressed every project nuance while offering significant cost savings and an enhanced installation rate— of utmost importance for a non-profit corporation," added Lorenz.

Unirac will be on hand at SPI 2012 to discuss the project and can be found at booth #2227.

  • Photovoltaics International 19th Edition

For manufacturers who had their heads in the bunker during 2012, fighting falling ASPs and eroding margins, the nineteenth edition brings you details of what lies in store for this coming year. Wright Williams & Kelly return in this issue with their popular analysis of payback on technology buys; crucially they analyze n-type wafers, Al2O3 passivation and copper metallization. SERIS shows us how to achieve 18.7% efficiencies using low-cost etching techniques on diffused wafers. We also have two important technology roundups: CIGS from Helmholtz Berlin, and PV module encapsulation techniques from Fraunhofer ISE.
