SRU Solar and Berlin-based Parabel have jointly completed a 29MW solar farm between the cities of Eisleben and Wimmelburg, bringing back to life a 100ha former metal works site.

The €40 million plant, which the companies say is one of the largest in eastern Germany, could produce enough electricity to power 7,500 homes, sufficient to meet the demands of Eisleben.

The plant uses over 121,000 polycrystalline modules made by Trina and 1,400 inverters supplied by Siemens and Danfoss.

The project, which was completed at the end of September, has also brought back into productive use the former Krughütte metal works, where copper ore was once mined and smelted.

Thomas Rakow, CEO of SRU Solar, said: “After the initial uncertainties caused by the reduced subsidisation, we are happy that we finally were able to realise this project.”
