Zoi was the founding CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection, now better known as Al Gore’s Climate Reality campaign. She also worked at the department of energy under the Obama administration.

“Beyond the massive market opportunity in grid-connected power, billions of people worldwide don't have regular access to electricity,” said Ahmad Chatila, president and CEO of SunEdison. “Cathy Zoi, who brings a deep background in both business and public service, is joining us to rapidly grow the rural electric utility opportunity,” he added.

The company has already announced a microgrid partnership in India that it hopes will provide electricity to 10 million people during the next five years.

“SunEdison's strong presence in emerging markets, like India and Brazil, has created significant commercial momentum in the rural electrification and microgrid markets,” said Zoi. “We intend to create the world's first private electric utility, with a global footprint, to address this underserved market profitably,” she added.
