WACKER SCHOTT Solar to build new wafer plant to meet huge demand

WACKER SCHOTT Solar is expanding its wafer production capacity to meet what it described as ‘huge demand’ with the construction of a new plant in Jena, Germany. The new facility is intended to help the joint venture company meet long-term supply contracts already secured through 2017. ‘Fab Jena 3’, will occupy an existing building at SCHOTT AG’s premises in Jena, the companies said.

“Rapid expansion of production capacities is vital for our ability to meet huge demand from our photovoltaic customers,” stressed Dr. Patrick Markschläger and Axel Schmidt, WACKER SCHOTT Solar’s two managing directors. “We’ve already sold most of our production capacity to specific customers via long-term contracts, most of which run until 2017.”

WACKER SCHOTT Solar also said that its most recent facility expansion was on target to reach a nominal annual capacity of 50MW within the next few weeks and total company-wide capacity is expected to reach 120MW by the end of 2008. The target for 2009 is 275MW and 1GW by 2012.
